Eight Things To Have On Your Monthly Website Maintenance List

Once you have launched your business website and you have poured hours into the design and content, you may think your work is done.  But that is definitely not the case.  Your website functions as a digital storefront that will be the first interaction potential customers will have with your business.  In order to ensure a seamless experience for visitors, you need to regularly maintain your website.

Below are eight monthly website maintenance tips to keep your site functioning properly.

Check for broken links and images

The online world is constantly changing which means URLs and images that you are linking to can change at any time.  For this reason, it is very important that you take time each month to go through every external and internal link and make sure they are working.  As far as images,  you also need to make sure those are displaying properly too.  You can get a helping hand with all this by using some free tools to verify your links.

Check site speed

Site speed is another important key factor in having a successful website.  It not only affects search engine rankings but also conversion rates. When someone comes onto your site they want it to load very quickly (we are talking a couple of seconds) and if it does take longer, bye bye Charlie.

Check all your forms

If you do not have a contact form or at the very least contact information, you need to add that asap.  Any forms that you have on your site should be tested frequently as this is one of the main ways customers communicate with your business.  Make certain the form is working and that any follow-up communication is being received by both you and the customer. You definitely do not want a customer emailing you and you never receive it.

Review SEO, website analytics and your KPIs

In order to effectively determine your website’s performance, you need to be measuring your search engine ratings,  KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) as well as website analytics.  By doing this, you will be able to determine any issues as well as the overall effectiveness of the website.

Updates to security software and bug fixes

It is essential that any upgrades, bug fixes, security patches and any other software updates that relate to your OS, web server, databases, CMS etc happen as soon as they are released.  Failing to install a security patch for example will leave your website vulnerable to any attacks..and you definitely do not want that.

Update any deals or promotions

If your website offers special deals and promotions, make sure you are updating them.  You do not want any expired coupons or irrelevant offers lingering on your site.  No one wants to see a holiday offer in summer!   By making sure your promotions and deals are updated, you are showing customers that your site is alive and fresh and they will in turn be motivated to keep checking back for your latest and greatest offerings.

Update your blog

Many websites have a blog and for good reason.  It not only helps boost brand awareness but it is very helpful in improving your website ranking.  Valuable and informative content is great for driving traffic, and keeping visitors coming back to your website.  You can see the benefits with backlinks, likes and shares which report back to the search engines that your site is offering up a great experience and it will in turn reward you by improving your website ranking.

Your blog should be updated at the minimum on a monthly basis and always make sure you are putting out high quality posts.  It is all about the quality if you want to achieve results.

Test out your site on new browsers and devices

Every website is made up of many varying components and the way a browser handles those components will vary greatly from browser to browser.  Your site make look great in Chrome but that does not mean it will on every other browser or device.  Be sure to test each of your links in not only Chrome but Safari, Internet Explorer and any other browsers.  You also want to make sure it looks good on any mobile or tablet devices.
